Comic Books Vs Manga

Click here to learn about the inspiration behind the project

This project was created as a love letter to both the manga and comic book industries that shaped our childhoods (and partially the rest of our lives up to this point as well).

All 4 members of the group (Aiden, Daniel, Joel and Oscar) grew up engaging with stories about our favourite characters such as Spider-Man and interacting with the different mediums they have existed in, such as TV Shows, films, video games but most importantly comic books. Later in our lives we gained access to a greater world and we began to interact with similar mediums but not from the western civilisation we had become used to, instead we had started to engage with Japanese culture instead through manga and anime such as the Dragon Ball franchise.

However, as individuals we soon realised that despite the clear crossover between interests, one has started to tower over the other as manga surpassed comic books in popularity and sales. Once we were set the task to create a database, we decided to look into why that is and which external factors affected the accelerates growth of one medium in comparison to another.

In this project we will be primarily focused on manga and comic books instead of films, shows or other mediums as we wanted to get to the root of it all as both manga and comics began as books and their popularity took them to greater heights from there.
